Registered users receive a disk space quota (specified by the administrator) and upload/store files accessible from the site.

Functionality

The administrator sets maximum upload sizes, valid extensions of files, and the datagrid size. The users that (a) are authenticated, and (b) have view permissions on the module will see a list of the files they have uploaded and a small box through which they can upload a new file.

Files are stored in their native format on the server. They can therefore be downloaded through a straightforward url. This means that one can use this url in web pages, emails, or forum posts for download of this file (or inclusion as image). The file list will show all file names as a hyperlink pointing to the file. Use this to copy and paste the url. Just ‘right-click’ on the file and select ‘copy shortcut’ from the pop-up menu. The url is now on the clipboard and can be pasted anywhere.

Image resizing

The module has inbuilt functionality to resize images. The size is set through a single integer. This integer specifies the maximum width or height of the image while preserving the image ratio. This means that setting the max size to 400 pixels, for instance, will make the image fit in a 400x400 pixel box. Although users can specify the maximum image size when uploading, the administrator sets an overall maximum image size. This is done to protect users from accidentally uploading images which have no practical use in sharing on a website (i.e. an image of 2000x3000 pixels does not readily display on a computer monitor).

Module Options
The administrator specifies:

Maximum file size (in Kb)
Total user quota (in Kb)
This is the ‘disk space’ allowance for a single user.
Valid file extensions.
A security mechanism.
Maximum image size (pixels).
File grid size.
The amount of files on a single page in the list of files.
Portal File List Maintenance

The administrator also has the ability to browse the complete portal’s contents through a separate page. This is accessed through the module’s context menu: ‘All Files List’.
